Electric vehicle (EV) parking is required in accordance with the 2021 Washington State Building Code, Section 429 – Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (see also WAC 51-50-0429). For buildings classified with an "A" occupancy, 10% of the provided parking spaces must be equipped with EV charging stations, 10% must be EV Ready, and another 10% must be EV Capable. Section 429 includes definitions for each of these space types. Section 429.4 addresses requirements for accessible parking, stating: “Ten percent of the accessible parking spaces, rounded up to the next whole number, shall be EV Charging Stations. An additional 10 percent, also rounded up, shall be EV Ready. At least one accessible space for each type of EV charging system is required.” Please note that Section 429 does not include exceptions for shared parking. Therefore, if shared parking is utilized, it must also comply with the same EV parking percentage requirements outlined above.
