The removal of the chestnut tree at Stewart Elementary is critical and essential as it is currently a health and safety hazard for students with life-threatening allergies to tree nuts. There have been several incidents where a student with a life-threatening allergy to tree nuts develops an allergic reaction as a result of exposure to the chestnuts produced by the tree. Additionally, the burrs of the chestnut tree are very sharp and have also caused minor injuries to students. These sharp burrs pose another safety hazard for staff and students. Thus, in an effort to maintain the health and safety of our students, that tree needs to be removed. Michelle Oliver, MSN, RN Director of Health Services Puyallup School District
